Fire up the confetti cannon– we’re celebrating an exciting new start to 2018 with the news that Smut Slam DC is moving to Ten Tigers Parlour in Petworth! Starting on February 21st, our shows will be every 3rd Wednesday of the month, so mark those calendars now.

(Oh and by the way– welcome to our new blog, too!)

Before we get any further: We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks and eternal fondness for the place we’ve called home for the past year, the Songbyrd Music House and Cafe. Our decision to move was difficult because we genuinely love the Songbyrd. It’s a great venue with a wonderful staff, and we’re so grateful to them for taking a chance on a new event and giving us the space to grow and find our footing there. It’s definitely a little bittersweet to leave the “nest”– and not to have our favorite bartender Zach every month! We’ll still be going there and we encourage all of you to keep eating and seeing shows there too.

So what’s up with the move?

We did a Smut Slam Cabaret over at Ten Tigers this past August, as a partner in the DC Center for the LGBT Community’s OutWrite queer literary festival, and we loved the space and the staff. Our decision to move had to do with our desire to keep growing the sex-positive community and network that Smut Slam DC has formed, and to take our branding and mission even further.

With a consistent day of the month for our show, we’ll be able to schedule and promote each event further in advance and hopefully keep growing our already-loyal audience. Ten Tigers is also an active partner in Collective Action for Safe Space’s (CASS) Safe Bar Collective, which means that the front of house staff has undergone training in recognizing and responding to sexual harassment with an emphasis on preventing and de-escalating unsafe situations; CASS also works with its Safe Bars to identify and increase employment opportunities for trans people of color. While we’ve *never* had a complaint or bad situation brought to our attention at Smut Slam DC to date, maintaining a safer space is one of our core values, so being at a CASS Safe Bar supports our (stated at every show) commitment to having both ourselves as hosts and the staff available and eager to help keep our patrons safe.

Ten Tigers is also developing a great reputation for being a venue for entertainment that you won’t see in other places in DC. From queer-centered events, to our friends Pretty Boi Drag, to a Betamax movie night, they’re curating some really exciting lineups of nightlife that’s just that little bit different and intriguing. We’re excited about being part of that– since we like to think of Smut Slam DC as a little bit different and intriguing too!

What’s different

With change comes growth! Here’s what you can expect to see in 2018:

  • We will always be on the 3rd Wednesday of the month
  • Doors will still be at 7:30, but we’re starting our shows at 8 so we can wrap the show earlier (don’t worry, you can still hang out afterward as long as you want!)
  • Join us upstairs in the Smut Slam Lounge starting at 7. You can get drinks and food at the bar, hang out and socialize, and enjoy browsing our new traveling library of vintage erotica and Fuckbucket curated collections from past shows.
  • We’ll be offering some custom cocktail specials named for and exclusive to our event– stay tuned!
  • In an agreement among all Smut Slam International shows, we’ll be rolling out “frequent slammer” cards usable at Slams around the world, which will let you get a free admission after you’ve attended a few shows.
  • …and a few other plans we’ve got up our sleeves!

Useful to know

  • Ten Tigers is a block and a half north of the Georgia Ave-Petworth (green and yellow line) Metro and the 60, 62, 63, and 70 buses have nearby stops as well.
  • Street parking is available, with many metered parking areas ending payment at about 6:30.
  • It’s entirely a 21+ venue.
  • The menu is (delicious!) Asian light fare, and happy hour starts at 5 PM.
  • The show is still $10 in advance through our EventBrite ticketing, and $15 at the door. Right now we’re still cash at the door, but we’re working on being able to take cards.

Join us Wednesday, February 21st for our birthday party!

We took January off to regroup and plan, but we’ll be starting our new monthly schedule on February 21st with our first Ten Tigers Slam. It’ll be exactly two years and one week since the very first Smut Slam DC took place (back before we went monthly even), so we’re planning some extra-special treats for our “birthday”! We can’t wait to see our old friends and our new faces as we celebrate an exciting start to a Smutty new year.
